Sailung – A Less Crowded Trail also identified as a land of 100 hillocks is a place located between the two districts of Nepal, Dolakha & Ramechhap. It lies only about 130km east of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. The major part of sailung lies in the Dolakha district whereas only about twenty percent lies in the Raamechhap district.

Sailung is one of the best trekking trails which is still to be explored. It is one of the trekking trails which offers a splendid view of the majestical Himalayan Range with natural flora & fauna. Sailung is among the places from where about seventy to eighty percent of the Himalayan Range of Nepal can be seen which includes the Everest region, Annapurna region, Langtang region, Ganesh Himal region & Rolwaling region.

On a clear day, the major Himalayas like Mt. Everest(8,848 m), Mt. Lhotse(8,516 m), Mt. Amadablam(6,812 m), Mt. Makalu(8,481 m), Rolwaling Himalaya range, Annapurna Himalayan range, Ganesh Himal, etc can be easily seen.

Major Inhabitants & Vegetation of Sailung

The area is mainly inhabited by Tamangs & Sherpas. So during the trek, one can observe and experience the culture and tradition of the Tamang and Sherpa people of the Himalayas, typical Nepali villages. This place is also famous for Hindu Pilgrim for Sailungeshwor Mahadev, a form of Lord Shiva residing over Sailung.

Sailung can be a beautiful destination for anyone looking for a few days off residing around Kathmandu. This place has its distinctive beauty in different seasons like in winter Sailung is covered with snow and spring is filled with forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine that are habitats of rare animals like barking deer.

Sailung Peak is the highest point of this trek located at an altitude of 3146m. One can observe the thirteen different color variations of the sun from the viewpoint. Sailung is a great choice for people who are interested to visit a non-tourist area for nature and culture both.

Being full of such beauty & culture distinguish only a few tourists visit this place every year because there is not much implemented for the betterment of the place why this place is backward, neither there is promotion nor there is development.

So, due to this Sailung becomes a less crowded trekking trail. There are all the basic amenities available for the journey but don’t expect comfort.

How to Reach Sailung?

The journey begins by driving from Kathmandu to Mudhe which takes about 5 to 6 hours. Then from Mudhe either you can drive to Dhunge which takes around 2 to 3 hours, the road condition from Mudhe to Dhunge is not so good. It takes around 2 to 3 hours just to get around 26 kilometers. Then you can stay overnight in Dhunge. An early morning visit to Sailung takes around a 3-4 hour trek approximately (depending upon one’s speed and uniformity).

After a visit to sailung, you can come back on the same route and stay at the same previous destination. Otherwise, you can organize a trek around the sailung because only getting to the sailung is not so beneficial one should visit the village of sailung. There is a lot more place to visit around the sailung than just visiting the viewpoint of sailung. Sailung viewpoint is one of the major attractions of sailung but not the only attraction of sailung. If you want an experience of real trekking then one should visit around the sailung.

As sailung is a less crowded trail, a nontourist area there are not many hotels or lodges so many of the trekking companies also do a camping trek in this area. But you can stay in a local homestay or lodges which are not soo many facilities but are best for the new local experience.

Best Time to Visit Sailung

In winter Sailung is covered with snow & clear sky, and spring is filled with forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine, In the rainy season, there might be some difficulty regarding transportation and walking but is fruitful as you can see green vegetation at its full at this time. You’ll just need to prepare some extra for the trek in the rainy season.
