Morning: Drive to Budhanilkantha → enter park → start hike through forest
Midday: Reach Nagi Gumba → explore → lunch with views
Afternoon: Optional hike higher or relax → descend → drive back to Kathmandu
Your day begins with a scenic 30–45 minute drive from Kathmandu to Budhanilkantha, located at the northern edge of the valley. This area serves as the gateway to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. After completing entry procedures, your hike starts along a well-marked trail that gradually ascends through dense forest.
As you move deeper into the park, the trail passes through lush woodland filled with pine, oak, and seasonal rhododendron. The sounds of birds and rustling leaves create a peaceful atmosphere, making the hike enjoyable and relaxing. With a steady pace, you will gradually gain elevation while enjoying occasional glimpses of the valley below.
After around 2 to 3 hours, you will reach Nagi Gumba, a serene Buddhist monastery perched on a hillside. This spiritual site offers a calm setting with prayer flags, scenic viewpoints, and a tranquil ambiance. Take time to explore the surroundings and enjoy your packed lunch while soaking in panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley.
In the afternoon, you may choose to hike a bit further uphill for better viewpoints or simply relax before starting your descent. The return walk follows the same trail, offering a fresh perspective of the forest and landscape. Upon reaching Budhanilkantha, you will drive back to Kathmandu, arriving by late afternoon.
